Miami World Cup celebrates Macgains 1 year Anniversary- Happy Anniversary Soph!

Overall we had a pretty good year in 2017, we learnt a tonne in the FX finishing 10th at the Europeans and 12th at the World Championships. Mostly finishing in the top 10 with our best result being a 4th at the World Cup final, we are pretty happy with that. We also had the awesome opportunity to join Team Magenta 32, part of The Magenta Project on the World Match Race Tour. We visited 4 continents in the first 3 months of 2017, basically sums up our crazy year. Finishing the World Championships in September it was nice to venture back to sunny Weymouth, debrief our year and plan our training for the winter.

However, things didn’t quite go to plan…. When I was about 14 I had a form of tendonitis in my wrist, the option back then was to go from helming a 420 to crewing (yes I was a very short crew!) but it worked, the wrist and arm settled down so I could get on with sailing, no problem. Then I started match racing where there were times where I felt nervous it was going to come back but it was fine, I was good to go. Long story short… the wrists came back, in 2016 my right wrist played up but with a little bit of time away from sailing it sorted itself out. 2017 the left decided to play up, luckily I noticed it early so it wasn’t too much of a disaster and didn’t miss any of the 2017 season. I wish I could say the same for the winter training. Since September I have been battling with my wrists and now right elbow. Multiple scans later I am hoping to be back in action in February (fingers crossed). Not the winters training me and Soph were hoping for. However I am pleased to say that Soph has managed to get out on the water still and has been able to get on with the sailing side of things. I can’t wait to get back on the water.

The support staff at the British Sailing Team and English Institute of sport have been amazing with the intense rehab, quick appointments and covering as many bases as possible.

Miami World Cup starts today, I’m gutted not to be there for the first competition of 2018 but will be watching and supporting Sophie along with Sophie Weguelin who has kindly stepped in for me. Good Luck girls!
